Acrylic and Thread

Art Story:
As a little girl I was always amused at the thought of going to a dance or somewhere where people had to dress up. The way dresses would flow when women walked, I could imagine myself older twirling. When it was finally time for me to get dressed up for prom I slowly realized that beauty came with a price. For prom, we would spend hundreds of dollars for one night of feeling like royalty. I had to straighten my natural hair, put make up on, and wear heels that I could barely walk in. That night made me realize I did not want that lifestyle, the one where you have to conform to others thoughts of beauty. Prom was the last time I allowed others to dictate on what beauty was. The following year I was walking down the aisle in my wedding dress that I picked that flowed but I wore my natural hair proudly. I no longer had to hold myself together by the thread for the sake of others, instead i now use thread to change the perspective of others.

Technique:
I wanted to go back to a similar technique I used a year ago this time. There was a lot of thread and needle work as well as paint. Each black and white thread took a couple hours to do as well...let's be honest, I am not a seamstress. The background of it was fun to make as well because crinkled plastic was used as well as dabs of paper towel creating a textured look.  This painting is one that I am very proud with the final results.
